The excitement centers around Michigan basketball’s pursuit of its first national championship since 1989.

On South University Avenue, commonly known as South U, students patiently waited outside popular spots like Good Time Charley’s (1140 S. “University Avenue, as well as The Brown Jug located at 1204 S.”  University Ave.). Many kept themselves entertained by singing everything from “The Star-Spangled Banner” to enthusiastic chants of “Let’s Go Blue!”

For senior Megan Baarn, the moment holds special significance as one of her final opportunities to celebrate with classmates before graduating. “We had the football championship a few years ago, but this is still really exciting,” she said while waiting outside Good Time Charley’s. “As a senior, it’s my last chance to be part of something like this.”

Some students even brought laptops to stay productive while waiting for the 8:50 p.m. tipoff. Senior Kylie DeNardo, for example, arrived early enough to work on an assignment due later in the week.

Elsewhere, the line outside Conor O’Neill’s (318 S. Main St.) extended multiple blocks along Main Street. Meanwhile, crowds also began gathering at Crisler Center for a watch party, with long lines weaving through parking lots as thousands waited to get inside.

Fans watching from home can tune in via TBS, TNT, or TruTV, or stream the game on HBO Max.
